Which hashcat should I install on my Windows XP 32bit?
Is it hashcat binaries or hashcat sources?

I'm interested in building a 4xGPU rig for password cracking, but the 1080's are out of my price range
the 1070's come close and they are around 450USD, is there anything up to 350 USD that i can buy that won't be a complete waste of money (Compared to the 1070s) - but still good bang vs buck?

Use hashcat with a dictionary of big words

Hi,

I wanted to use hashcat to brute-force all the words in a dictionary file, and the maximum size of the words are 64 bytes.

I modified the common.h file and change the the following lines and then rebuild the code:

#define PW_MAX              128
#define PW_DICTMAX          127

But it seems that hashcat can recover only the wordlist up to size 31 bytes!
What shall I do further if I want to still use hashcat with bigger word sizes?

P.S. I need to use pure sha-1 mode (-m 100)
P.S.S. I use dictionary attack (-a 0)

Why "Fan: 33%" while high temperature ? Could it be higher to cool better the GPU ?

Hello all,

So, here is the thing: I just started learning PT beside my actual study (medicine) and find it very interesting. I made/grabbed different types of hashes and now would like to see them cracked and after research it turned out that hashcat is the best option. However, my laptop is so slow and I need a faster computer so I thought I will go for a cracking rig, since cracking is why I decided to buy it for! However, I know literally nothing about hardware. I tried to grasp things but the deeper I get the more complicated it seems with all this stuff of cooling and speeds. I learned, however, that I should not buy a gaming PC. I wanted to buy a rig from sagitta but their prices are way too much for me. I only have around 3000$. BTW: I live in Europe at the moment. 

My question is, how can I get started? Could you please help me here? Basically I want to focus on cracking NetNTLM2 after converting it using this script: https://github.com/ins1gn1a/NetNTLM2Hash...hashcat.py

I know all of you hate it when people ask and seem like they are not willing to read themselves, I tried! But how can I determine which size do I need? What CPU is best used in combination with GPU in my price range? Cooling? Right case? Power [it is paid by someone else but Jeremi said to take into consideration because of heat]? SSD or HDD? And many other aspects that a newbie like me will probably not take into consideration and waste the money, that's why I am asking! Normally the answer is: it depends. So here I will try to list some information:

Budget: around 3000$ 
Purpose: only cracking
Type of hashes: NetNTLMv1 converted from NetNTLM2 using the aforementioned tool, might hack other types later
Multiple or single: Single
Power: not paid by me, idc.
Heat: My apartment is normally around 24C thanks to central heating system
Have I ever collected a PC? Never. always bought it assembled. I would take it to a shop to assemble it unless I figure it is easy.

Others: every two/three months I can afford to buy additional GPU (around 600$) and would like to do so. Thus, probably I will have to buy a big case from the beginning and a very good cooling system that can be upgraded also?

Problem with scrypt

I have a hash I believe is scrypt however I'm not 100%, the hash originally wasnt base64 encoded nor did it have SCRYPT: at the start, I base64 encoded the salt and digest but I'm getting line length exception with and without base64 encoding..

Hello guys,

I've just upgraded my system and am now using Amd GPU Pro 16.50-365149
I tried to run the latest stable release and ran into the error described here:https://hashcat.net/forum/thread-6108.html 

I've downloaded the beta version as suggested and hashcat now starts normally except that cracking speed has decreased drastically when compared to what it used to be:

R9 290 GPU

MD5, wordlist attack:

Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Hashcat exhausted, yet password is in dictionary

(Testing my own router, that's how I know password is in the dictionary ...)

I'm using airodump-ng to get the capfiles and using aircrack (or hashcat's online tool) to convert to hccap.

Pyrit, cowpatty, and others all tell me the .cap is fine. Yet, it really isn't... 

Can someone tell me exactly how to check the .cap for what the problem might be?

I found that hashcat 3.20 creates empty output file at start, while the version 2.01 is not (file creates on success only)!
Potfile is disabled.

Is it normal or we have some bug here?

Installed Hashcat v3.20 and recommended AMD Drivers on new Ubuntu server 16.04 server. Receiving the following error message when trying to run hashcat, file appears in same directory. Any advise?

Performance related to password length

Some time ago, since oclHashcat-plus v0.15, the password length limit was increased from 15 characters to 31 characters due to popular demand at the expense of some performance drops for fast hashes.


How difficult would it be to compile an alternate version of hashcat that re-enabled the 15 character limit in order to gain performance?

I would mostly like to see it for MD5 and SHA1, but other fast algorithms, as mentioned here, https://hashcat.net/events/p13/js-ocohaaaa.pdf would be good also.

I was reading this, https://hashcat.net/forum/thread-2543.ht...erformance and was thinking how nice it would be to have some additional performance available in an alternate version of hashcat.

How labor-some would it be to bring back the zero-based optimization, for example?  What performance gains could be expected?

I am working on getting familiar with hashcat and wanted to start by decrypting the WPA2 key of my own router. It's a 16 digit key, say 1234567890123456.

I started hc like this:
hashcat64 -m 2500 -w 3 --status --restore-disable -a 3 handshake.hccap 1234567890?d?d?d?d?d?d
i.e. I provided the first ten PSK digits and had hc work on the rest. Program starts up fine, reports the SSID to be targeted, but finishes after 10 seconds with status 'Exhausted', though it seems to have iterated over the correct values. At least there's an intermediary status message like 'Candidates #1: 1234567890555555 -> 1234567890955555.

Please help me find my mistake

I'm new to hashcat. In this moment i'm working on GTX 770 2GB,  but it will be upgraded to GTX 1080. 
After reading this forum I understand that the best solution for HC and similar is Founders Edition. 
I can buy 1080FE from Gigabyte,Zotac, PNY, EVGA, ASUS,  MSI.
However I can not find the answer for one question:

Is there any difference between them? Or silmpy FE is FE no matter who made it? 

Or maybe there are reasons why its better to buy for example: zotac than asus?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to run Hashcat 3.2 under Windows 10 (downloaded pre-compiled binaries) and I can't make it work with GPU and CPU at the same time. In fact, I can't make it work with CPU at all. I have NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480. It seems to work fine. I updated Nvidia driver to 376.33. But when I also try to include the CPU ( I have 2 quad core Xeon X5482) I get an error

clCreateContext(): CL_UNKNOWN_ERROR

I also don't understand why hashcat complains about the card not having shader model 5.0. I believe it is shader model 5.0. Anyway, GPU part seems to work.

I tried to install opencl runtime 16.1.1 - did not help.
I tried to install full intel SDK 6.3.0.1904 - did not help.
